Patek Philippe & Cie. Exceptional 18k Gold Split Seconds Chronograph With Instantaneous 30-Minute Register, circa 1907Case: No. 409822, four body bassine, 18k yellow gold, 49 mm, gold cuvette, back with three initials, hinged front bezel
Dial: white enamel, Arabic hour numerals, Breguet blue steel hands, subsidiary sunk seconds, thirty minute register at twelve, outermost chronograph track with 1/5th seconds
Movement: No. 137933, 26 jewels, eight adjustments, straight line counterpoised lever escapement, bi-metallic compensated balance with gold temperature and mean time adjustment screws, blued steel Breguet balance spring, swan's neck micrometric regulator
Signed: case, dial and movement signed Patek Philippe & Cie. Geneva, Switzerland
Note: Technical improvements and advancements in the construction of split second chronographs were a strong focus of Patek Philippe in the early 1900's. The present lot is a superior example which employs one of the most important experimental features - a spring pivoted exactly at center which automatically adjusts the exerted force on both sides of the stop thongs. The split chronographs made in the 1907 period were often kept in the factory as Patek Philippe developed and perfected the split function and the accuracy of the complication. They were later cased and sold in the late 1920's as evidenced by the present lot.
