Condition Notes: This finely crafted Van Cleef & Arpels brooch is designed as a stylized bee in polished 18k yellow gold. At its center is an oval-cut Ceylon sapphire measuring approximately 10.28 x 7.90 x 7.20 mm, displaying saturated blue color with a subtle violet undertone, fine clarity, and minimal inclusions. One minor abrasion and a small cavity on the pavilion, likely associated with a natural inclusion, are visible under magnification. The thorax features a drilled spinel cabochon with shallow surface cavities also present under magnification.
A French maker’s mark for Péry et Fils is present, a renowned manufacturing atelier that frequently produced work for Van Cleef & Arpels during the mid-20th century. Stylistically, there are clear similarities from the work of Herbert Rosenthal, the American jeweler celebrated for his jeweled insect motifs. Reference number available upon request.
