Condition Notes: Measuring an impressive 38.15 x 28.25 mm, this saturated blue aquamarine displays a rare and visually compelling cat’s-eye effect, a phenomenon known as chatoyancy. Caused by the presence of fine, parallel needle-like inclusions, this optical effect results in a sharp, luminous band of light that glides across the surface of the gem under direct lighting.
In a departure from the norm, the cutter has chosen to orient the internal inclusions so the cat’s eye appears vertically across the shorter axis of the stone, rather than running horizontally along its length, as is typical in chatoyant gems.
The setting is stamped 18k, but XRF and standard metal testing confirm the alloy is 14k gold. A pinstem is fitted to the reverse, allowing the piece to be worn as a brooch, and a bail is also present, intended for wear on smaller to medium-sized chains or collars, enhancing its versatility as a convertible jewel. The under carriage of the piece is solid/sealed.
