Condition Report*:
Metals:
Gold
Overall Condition: Fair
Condition Notes: A stately example of American horology, this Elgin pocket watch features a richly detailed 14k gold full hunter’s case adorned with a striking 10k gold applied Masonic double-headed eagle on the reverse, accompanied by the Latin motto Spes Mea In Deo Est. The interior of the case is stamped "Dueber 500201," with the matching number inscribed inside the cuvette. The total gross weight of the timepiece is 159.80 grams. Housed within is a 15-jewel B.W. Raymond Model lever-set transitional movement, circa 1872–73, currently not in working condition and requiring service for restoration. The size 18 case is classic in form, with a white enamel dial beneath an acrylic crystal displaying few hairlines and minute cracks commensurate with age, and subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock, all enclosed under a hinged cover that opens with the push of the crown. Included is an 8k gold and gold-filled Bates & Bacon chain and clip, measuring 4-3/4 inches from clip to charm and 6 inches from the clip to the lobster clasp, with a weight of 24.60 grams. The case and movement show expected patina from age, yet retain historical and visual appeal for the collector of Masonic or American railroad-grade timepieces.
