We are always thrilled when we have the opportunity to offer a tool watch which was used for its intended purpose and possesses a legacy of use.
Captain "Dex" Howe was gifted this watch by his wife back in the early 1940's, at which time he was already an alumni of the Boeing School of Aeronautics, having graduated at the tender age of nineteen.
As recollected by his son, Thomas Howe, his father celebrated his 21st birthday as a First Officer in a United Boeing 247 (aviation regulations did not allow anyone under twenty-one years of age to pilot a commercial airliner). It was the last leg of a cross country flight departing from from Oakland, California and arriving at a small grass strip located in a southern section of San Francisco - known today as the San Francisco International Airport.
In 1941 Captain Dex took the opportunity to join the legendary Bob Six, at his upstart company Continental Airlines, where he flew prop propeller planes including: Boeing 80A, Boeing 247, Douglas DC3, Convair 240, North American B 25 and Boeing B17
Captain Dex retired to his ranch in Wyoming in 1949 while Thomas followed in his father's aeronautics' footsteps.
Watch clasp emblems: The emblems reflect Captains Howe early career achievements. The totem pole logo is a vintage 1930's Boeing Air emblem along with a vintage 1930's United Airlines emblem.
Note: Boeing had a large stake in United Airlines at the time and the companies worked in tandem.
The dial scratch: Captain Dex removed the bezel of the watch in an attempt to fix the sweep, minute register hand when it failed to return to zero. Unsuccessful in his attempt, he decided to retire the watch from aviation operations.
Associated materials:
A facsimile of the cover of "The Continental Eagle" dated November, 1945. Captain Dex shown with his son and future pilot, Thomas, at Denver's Stapleton Airport.
A facsimile From the Continental Airlines Golden Eagles book published in March of 1982 commemorating the accomplishments of past employees.
