Condition Notes: A pendant fit for royalty, quite literally. Originally purchased in the early 1980s at the Georg Jensen store in Copenhagen, this pendant was reportedly created for a foreign royal who ultimately never claimed it. The piece was then offered to and acquired by the current owner during a visit to the Georg Jensen retailer in Copenhagen.
Years later, in 1997, the owner returned to Copenhagen to inquire about the gold content/weight and to learn more about the piece’s origin. Although initially informed that the Georg Jensen store no longer handled gold pieces, a longtime employee recognized the design as part of a special collection produced years earlier. Following this encounter, the client corresponded directly with Georg Jensen. The company formally confirmed the pendant as original to their production, identifying it as design #14110, crafted in 18k gold, and assigning it an insurance value of 32,000 DKK (approximately $4,749 USD at the time).
This exceptional pendant is accompanied by a rare and complete provenance package chronicling the entire story: the original confirmation letter from Georg Jensen, the client’s written inquiry, printed photographs, and original film negatives, all supporting its authenticity and securing its place in the maker’s archive. This piece also bridges jewelry craftsmanship with the raw beauty of rarely encountered smithsonite (a rare highly colorful zinc carbonate mineral found in the oxidation zones of zinc ore deposits) in a massive statement pendant!
Georg Jensen: Danish sculptor Georg Jensen founded his silversmith business in Copenhagen in 1904. His unique designs embraced elegant lines, organic motifs and simplicity of form that made him an instant commercial success. Not tied to one artistic arena, Georg Jensen created masterful works in jewelry, cutlery and hollowware. He is by rights one of the most influential silversmiths of the 20th century. His brightly polished creations, both pure and timeless, encompassed Art Nouveau and Avant-Garde styles. Georg Jensen died in 1935. His extraordinary vision continues today with his company producing fine jewelry, watches, gift items and cutlery in gold, sterling silver, stainless steel and precious gems. Type(s): Smithsonite
