Condition Notes: The Kaleidoscope Necklace by Harry Winston is part of a collection that examines structured color and movement through precise gemstone arrangement. Its design draws from the repeated symmetry of a kaleidoscope, creating a continuous pattern of radiating elements set in platinum with 18k gold stone settings. The necklace features a 1.17 carat pink sapphire at the center, noted in the documentation as being of Madagascan origin. Stamped "HW 650211" and "PT950/750" on the reverse. The necklace is designed without a clasp due to its extended length, allowing it to be worn in a continuous drape. A copy of the Harry Winston Retail Replacement Valuation is included, detailing gemstone specifications, referencing the matching stock number 650211, and assigning a replacement value of $68,000. Included with the necklace is the original Harry Winston necklace folio for storage and presentation.
Harry Winston: An ambitious man, Harry Winston parlayed a $2,000 investment into what is arguably regarded as the best diamond jewelry business of the 20th century. The 5th ave location opened in March 1960, Harry incorporated in 1932. Harry Winston was renown for his ability to see the potential locked within a diamond. He often purchased jewelry solely for the purpose re-cutting major diamonds. He is famous for cutting many of the world’s most spectacular diamonds, such as the Jonker and the Taylor-Burton. Winston donated three very famous diamonds to the Smithsonian museum: the Oppenheimer, the Hope, and the Portuguese. Often referred to as the "King of the Diamonds", he owned one-third of the world's most famous diamonds at one time. Harry Winston died in 1978. The business continues to operate select cities across the U.S. and abroad. Among the many variations of identifiable WINSTON and HW maker’s marks, two other maker’s marks are widely seen on their jewelry. The Swiss Francios Tavernier mark is dated to 1942 through the mid-1960s. The Jacques Timey mark, also Swiss, was established in 1966 and used through the early 2000s.
