Sonwai: Verma Nequatewa was born in 1949 on the Hopi Pueblo Reservation in Arizona. She signs her unique jewels Sonwai, the Hopi feminine word for beauty. Sonwai started in the jewelry industry by apprenticing to her uncle and renowned Hopi jeweler Charles Loloma in the 1960s. She worked with him for decades until his studio closed in the 1990s, then opened her studio and preserved his legacy through her jewelry. During her time as an apprentice for her uncle, she learned metalsmithing and lapidary techniques, in addition to being able to distinguish the highest quality stones. The concepts of form and content guide Sonwai’s colorful, geometric designs, which draw inspiration from the rocky landscape of her home in Northeastern Arizona. Today Sonwai is recognized as a leading Native American jeweler whose work has been featured not only in the United States but Internationally as well.
