Condition Notes: These gorgeous earrings were previously offered as Property from the Estate of Mrs. Walter Matthau (Carol Grace). These elegant, compact earrings by Van Cleef & Arpels feature distinctive sapphires with richly saturated, radiating blue coloration. Under magnification, the sapphires appear clean overall, with natural prismatic crystalline inclusions consistent with unenhanced material. Given the likely age of the piece, minor wear is present in the form of small abrasions and nicks/chips to some sapphire and diamond surfaces.
Each earring is marked with serial number 15819, with one also stamped "Van Cleef & Arpels N.Y." The earrings are currently fitted with posts and omega clip backs for wear with pierced ears, though conversion is possible if desired.
Van Cleef & Arpels: Parisian jeweler Alfred Van Cleef opened his salon in partnership with his brothers-in-law, Julien and Charles Arpels, in 1906. The company quickly earned a reputation for using only the highest-quality colored gemstones. Their timeless designs employed elegant curves and clean, fluid lines, capturing the essence of beauty in motion. In 1930, the firm patented the first minaudiere, a purse-like compartmentalized vanity case. In 1933, Van Cleef and Arpels introduced "invisible setting" or "mystery setting." This innovative technique took the market by storm. The firm continues under the umbrella of the Richemont Group.
