Condition Notes: A timeless and versatile collection, this Jean Vitau suite blends organic inspiration with luxurious refinement. Masterfully crafted in platinum and 18k yellow gold, the set features a brooch, ring, and matching earrings, all designed in a striking leaf motif, coated with full-cut diamonds across every outward-facing surface. The two-tone interplay of platinum and yellow gold enhances the shimmering brilliance of the diamonds. The brooch is secured with a dual pinstem and catch, ensuring stability when worn. The ring, while sizeable, may require careful adjustments to preserve its integrity and design. The earrings are completed with clipbacks, though a post could be added for additional security.
Jean Vitau: French jeweler Jean Vitau emigrated to New York City in the 1960s bringing to America more than just his skills as a jeweler; he brought ingenuity. He had with him three diamond wedding rings, each having a special kind of setting which at the time was unfamiliar to American jewelers: “bar setting”. The bar setting technique provided a secure and snag-proof way of setting diamonds and precious stones.
He patented and trademarked this revolutionary technique under the name Gemlok.
Originally specializing in diamond set engagement rings and wedding bands, Jean Vitau expanded his market share by creating the Jean Vitau Collection, a more fashion oriented line. He drew inspiration from the beauty of nature and rendered his visions in the most vividly hued precious gemstones and diamonds often depicting flowers, animals, insects and fish.
Jean Vitau passed away on February 12, 2011 at age 83. His elegant jewels represent the merging of creativity, the artist's palette and the master jeweler's skills.
