Condition Notes: Marsh & Co., a San Francisco-based jewelry house established in the early 20th century, is well known for its unconventional aesthetic, most notably its use of gun bluing. Founded by the Marsh brothers in the 1920s, the firm broke away from the traditional use of polished gold and silver, instead embracing the moody, dark sheen of blued (blackened) steel, a finish originally developed for firearms to guard against rust.
This particular piece is crafted primarily in platinum, with such treated stainless steel outlines set atop each link. The under gallery is richly detailed and bears the hand-engraved inscription "Marsh’s / Platinum." This piece remains in fantastic condition, showing only minor signs of wear on some areas of the stainless steel and platinum links.
Marsh & Co.: Lucien A. Marsh founded the Californian based business in 1940. The firm’s signature trait was geometric design. Marsh’s had shops in Monterey, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Coronado before closing in 1986. Avg Color: G-H-I
