Condition Notes: The larger oval-shaped brooch serves as a quintessential example of Victorian mourning jewelry. The reverse is engraved: "In memory of John Cutruck (spelling uncertain), died March 19th, 1875." Beneath the inscription is a compartment typical of mourning jewelry, designed to hold a small keepsake such as fabric or a lock of hair from the deceased. Each piece shows areas of discoloration and oxidation consistent with age. Both are fitted with bails and pin stems, allowing wear as either pendants or brooches.
