LOT ESSAY
As the oldest continuously operating Swiss manufacture and one of three who make up the "holy trinity" of fine Swiss watchmaking, Vacheron Constantin produced its first chronograph wristwatch in 1916, which featured wire lugs and a 30-minute counter. Other offerings would follow, such as the 1928 cushion shaped pulsations dial that would be the inspiration for Harmony collection. However, in just 22 years after providing their first wrist worn time recorder, Vacheron Constantin brought to market the chronograph wristwatch that would be in their offerings for the next 30 years, and would become an icon amongst astute Vacheron Constantin collectors, Ref. 4072.
When it comes to vintage VC references, especially those with a chronograph complication, little is universally known. Research shows that total production only reached 1178 examples in three metals: yellow gold, rose gold and stainless steel with a small number of two-tone watches(1). Over the production period of Ref. 4072, the offerings can be broken down into six dial Variations, as offered by watchmaker and collector Peter Toot, who studied over 80 known examples to create understanding and organization amongst a field of authentic and rogue auction records.

This near pristine example offered here would fall under Variant 2 dial, produced in 1942 with movement number #437686. Additionally, and even more rare than the timepiece itself, is its indisputable provenance. This dual signature Ref. 4072 retailed by Turler was acquired directly from Vacheron Constantin as part of their Les Collectionneurs vintage collection of timepieces, only available in select boutiques around the world. Rarely does an opportunity arise in the world of vintage Vacheron Constantin collecting where a timepiece of this significance can be acquired with no question to its authenticity.
