Condition Notes: The carved Munsteiner citrine mermaid ring by Julius Cohen represents a rare collaboration between two distinct names in fine jewelry: the precision lapidary work of the Munsteiner family and the craftsmanship of Julius Cohen, an American house founded in 1956. At its center is a sculptural citrine cut in the Munsteiners’ signature fantasy style, with angular internal faceting that creates a dynamic interplay of light and geometry. Subtle citrine color zoning adds further visual interest.
The detailed gold shank features a merman and mermaid flanking the stone, emphasizing the piece’s aquatic theme. *Due to the intricate design and the placement of three full-cut diamonds near the base, the ring is likely not suitable for sizing. The citrine shows minor abrasions and hairline scratches, but the piece remains in very good overall condition. Accompanied by a Julius Cohen Retail Replacement Valuation stating $12,000 and known weights; as well as a Julius Cohen ring box.
Julius Cohen: In 1929, while just a teen, Julius Cohen began working for his uncles at Oscar Heyman Brothers. He spent thirteen years as an apprentice learning the old world approach and techniques of jewelry manufacture, before joining illustrious jeweler Harry Winston. He expanded the Winston brand across the US, most predominantly in Texas. Julius Cohen struck out on his own, opening a New York salon in 1955. His business catered to an exclusive clientele, by employing a marketing approach of serving clients at their homes. This exclusivity combined with excellence of craftsmanship and design made Julius Cohen jewelry highly sought after. The designer passed away in 1995. His business continues today under the leadership of his son-in-law, Leslie Steinweiss.
