Gucci began with a simple mission of offering well-crafted leather goods and small luggage to the residents of Florence. Gucci’s founder, Guccio Gucci set out to blend the distinguished look of England’s upper class with the workmanship of Tuscan artisans.
By the 1930s Gucci had established a roster of clients which consisted largely of equestrian enthusiasts. This pushed Gucci to create the Horsebit motif which has become a lasting icon of the brand. Over the years Gucci developed other signatures including the use of bamboo, the GG monogram, the Jackie O bag named after the former first lady and style icon, and the Floral silk print.
In line with the brand’s luggage and travel roots, by the mid-20th century Gucci had become a favorite of the growing jet set class. In 1994 Tom Ford became Gucci’s creative director and combined the house’s history of offering carefully crafted luxury items with his own flare for risk taking glamourous designs. During his ten year tenure at the creative helm of Gucci, Ford revived the brand’s image worldwide by creating cutting edge designs and updating the brand’s archive.
