"Women are tired of jewelry-looking jewelry, and they want one-of-a-kind pieces," Webb said. "Animals are here to stay."
The late iconic and wildly imaginative designer is best known for his distinctive carved and enameled animal bracelets, gold necklaces, and exquisite rock crystal pieces. Webb's original and modern creations are treasured by jewelry connoisseurs, animal lovers and modern art enthusiasts alike. By the 1960s, his following included several of Hollywood's elite, including Elizabeth Taylor, who wore her diamond-studded lion and pearl jewelry in her films. Other stars who have worn Webb's designs include Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lawrence and Beyoncé.
"David Webb created contemporary, wearable sculptures," said Jill Burgum, Senior Director of Fine Jewelry at Heritage Auctions. "His passion for color, texture, scale and unusual materials brought him to the forefront of jewelry design in the 1950s and 1960s."
His fondness for nature and ancient cultures influenced his most famous motifs, stylized animals and flowers, establishing him as one of the true pioneers of American jewelry design.
