Property of a San Diego, CA Lady

George Kunz was Tiffany & Co.'s most famous and influential gemologist at the turn of the 20th century. In 1902, he received an unusual pink crystal with a lilac cast that had been discovered in an abandoned mine at California's Pala Mountain. Kunz knew that he was looking at a mineral thought by most mineralogists to be extinct. Based on many characteristics, including the ability to store light and glow in the dark, Kunz identified the mineral as spodumene, later named kunzite, in his honor.

According to the consignor, this lovely necklace was a gift to her great grandmother on her wedding day in 1906, and it has come to her by descent.
