Letter of Accompaniment written by notable Jewelry Historian and Writer Janet Zapata

Although the name, F. Walter Lawrence, is not as well-known as it was one hundred years ago, his jewelry is still as desirable today as it was at the beginning of the twentieth century. He considered his jewelry to be "unusual" as advertised on the first page of an early pamphlet, Unusual Jewelry F. Walter Lawrence, Incorporated. He had an eye for gemstones, searching for just the right specimens for his designs.

Lawrence selected special gemstones for his jewelry as exemplified by the Queensland boulder opals set into an imaginative setting on this pendant. They are accentuated with demantoid garnets, Montana sapphires, rubies, and a citrine artfully set into the mounting, providing not only color to the composition, but also two diamonds, one white and the other light pink, providing sparkle points to the design. Only a creative designer would have understood the importance of such a subtle detail to the arrangement.

It has been noted that Marcus & Co. purchased the "entire last year's output..." of opals from the Lightning Ridge Mine in New South Wales in 1908. Perhaps this led Lawrence to another source of extraordinary Australian opals like the one artfully adorned in this one-of-a-kind pendant necklace.
