Mellerio: Maison Mellerio is led by Laure Isabelle Mellerio, 14th generation from the original founders. Their roots go back to Northern Italy, whence family members emigrated to France in 1515. Marie de Medici, Regent of France, in 1613, granted the Mellerio family her Royal Protection, giving them trading rights across the realm without bureaucratic restrictions. This is the date the firm has adopted as their beginning. In 1780 it is reported that Queen Marie Antoinette purchased jewels from Jean Baptiste Mellerio when he presented to her at Versailles. In 1815 we see their move to Rue de la Paix, a newly created avenue by Napoleon I, where they still are today. In 1830 Mellerio is named the official jeweler to the French Royal Family by King Louis Philippe I and they proceed to exhibit at all the international shows so popular in the 19th century, each garnering more illustrious clientele and awards. The Paris World Fair of 1867 is a watershed for Mellerio, who receives the gold medal. Royal purchasers include Queen Isabel II of Spain, whose flexible peacock feather tiara is one of the earliest known examples of jewelry made in platinum. Another notable client that fair was the King of Italy who purchased a wild flower and laurel branch diadem for his future daughter-in-law, Margaret of Savoy. Their jewelry is known for their floral and naturalistic realism, and guilloche enamel was used extensively in the Art Nouveau garden jewelry. Their extensive collaboration with the couture houses was evident in the 1950’s when they designed the jewelry worn in fashion shows for Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Jean Patou, for example. Trophies are another important creation—they create the awards given to winners of the Roland Garros Tournament, better known as the French Open, since 1981, and they create the Ballon D’OR, given to the best soccer player of the year, since 1955. 2005 was the year of creating their patented “Mellerio cut”, applied to precious stones and diamonds. Their long history is barely summarized here, as they celebrated their 400th anniversary in 2013.
