Condition Notes: While Cartier is best known for its panthers, Love Bracelets, and iconic Art Deco creations, the Cowboy Ducks represent a more whimsical chapter in the maison’s history. Produced in mind numbingly limited numbers, likely for boutique clients or as special commissions, these figural brooches are now highly collectible for their rarity, craftsmanship, and undeniable charm.
This particular duo is especially desirable. It features not only the classic cowboy duck, but also a rarely encountered Native American chief variant, complete with a finely modeled coral tomahawk, cleverly grasped in its tail feathers as it waddles away!
Condition remains very good, with moderate wear to the high-polish finish on the reverse of each. Both pieces retain their original pinstems and trombone-style slide catches, while the graspable ends of each catch show slight bending, they remain fully functional. Each is signed Cartier, France, 18k. The Indian duck bears a faint serial number, while the cowboy duck features two individual serial numbers, all available upon request.
Cartier: In 1847 Louis-Francois Cartier founded his business, creating jewelry made of gold, awash with colorful enamels and glittering gemstones. This appealed to the French aristocracy. His son, Alfred joined him, and later grandsons Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, who took over during the Art Deco era. The company's distinctive Oriental-influenced style helped create a jewelry empire with worldwide locations. Joined by designer Jeanne Toussaint in 1933, Cartier created a range of vanity cases, desk sets and accessories. The firm continues to produce exquisite jewelry, watches, and objects d'art for a prestigious clientele under the umbrella of the Richemont Group.
