Avg Quality: Good

Metals:
Gold

Overall Condition: Very Good
Condition Notes: Rooted in Cartier’s mid-20th-century exploration of cultural and ethnographic themes, this brooch portrays a stylized bust inspired by African or tribal forms. The design reflects the "exotic" aesthetic language seen across Cartier, Boucheron, and Van Cleef & Arpels during the period. Likely part of a limited run, it remains a distinctive example, preserved in very good condition.
The reverse is marked Cartier Paris and bears the serial number 012013. French eagle head hallmarks, indicating 18k gold, are present alongside an unidentified French maker’s mark. The hinged double-prong clip mechanism is intact and well constructed, suggesting the piece was originally intended as a brooch or ornamental clasp. Minor porosity and light gold oxidation are visible upon close inspection.
Cartier: In 1847 Louis-Francois Cartier founded his business, creating jewelry made of gold, awash with colorful enamels and glittering gemstones. This appealed to the French aristocracy. His son, Alfred joined him, and later grandsons Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, who took over during the Art Deco era. The company's distinctive Oriental-influenced style helped create a jewelry empire with worldwide locations. Joined by designer Jeanne Toussaint in 1933, Cartier created a range of vanity cases, desk sets and accessories. The firm continues to produce exquisite jewelry, watches, and objects d'art for a prestigious clientele under the umbrella of the Richemont Group.
