    The lot includes: one brooch featuring cultured pearls ranging in size from 4.75 - 5.75 mm, set in sterling silver (Dimensions: 1-7/16 inches x 1-1/2 inches); and one featuring cultured pearls ranging in size from 6.00 - 7.75 mm, set in sterling silver (Dimensions: 1-3/4 inches x 1-1/4 inches); with one having a maker's mark for Mikimoto and the other marked Mikimoto. Gross weight 16.80 grams.

    Condition Notes: The beautiful work of Mikimoto should be worn every day! One brooch marked Mikimoto Tokyo and S for sterling silver and the other is has a maker's mark for Mikimoto and S. Accompanied by a Mikimoto box. Brooches are completed by a pinstem and catch on the reverse.
    Mikimoto: The name Mikimoto is synonymous with the highest quality Japanese cultured pearls available. Its founder, Kokichi Mikimoto, was an early pioneer in the concept of pearl farming. While he was not the first to invent the culturing process, Mikimoto did refine it, patenting his technique. He is recognized as the master of the culturing process. The need for culturing pearls arose out of the demise of the natural pearl market in 1930, when over-fishing and pollution devastated pearl beads. Today, cultured pearls are farmed worldwide with Japan, China, Australia and Thailand the leading producers.
