Condition Notes: This fantastic plique à jour enamel butterfly brooch is stylized with beautifully rendered red, white, and blue enamel panels that display nuanced color blending and vivid luminosity. Plique à jour enamel differs from other enamel techniques by being created without a backing, allowing light to pass through the translucent enamel much like stained glass, a demanding and highly skilled process prized for its airy radiance. The piece also features prominent wing markings that echo the "eye spots" found in many butterfly and moth species, a natural defense trait intended to startle predators. The reverse is fitted with a pinstem and catch for wear and is marked 18k and Italy.
