Condition Notes: This pendant centers on a rare frosted glass medallion by René Lalique, originally designed as a perfume hangtag for "Chose Promise" by the Parisian perfume house Fioret. The glass is intricately molded with a classical nude figure among swirling clouds, signed "R. Lalique, Fioret, Paris" along the lower edge. It is set against a gold backing plate and framed by a border of square-shaped rubies, with the lower half accented by single-cut diamonds mounted in silver-topped gold. The bail is adorned with rose-cut diamonds, while one full-cut and two Swiss-cut diamonds appear to be later replacements, a discreet nod to the piece’s layered history. Minor chipping is visible at the three mounting points and along the edge under magnification, with discoloration to the gold visible beneath the glass. A striking fusion of fine jewelry and early 20th-century perfume design, this piece represents Lalique’s innovative blend of sculpture, function, and adornment immortalized in precious metals and gemstones.
Lalique, René: Rene Lalique (1860-1945) began his career as a freelance jewelry designer for acclaimed houses Cartier and Boucheron. In 1885, he opened his own workshop where he produced spectacular sculptural pieces through the use of unique materials such as glass, horn, enamel and gold. His designs seamlessly wove fantasy and nature together. The theory of metamorphosis and its affect on the female figure created some of the most dramatic imagery known to jewelry, let alone art. Lalique is indisputably the master of Art Nouveau jewelry design. Actress Sarah Bernhardt brought Lalique great fame by promoting his designs, which she boldly wore on-stage and at public events. Under the patronage of oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian, Lalique created 145 commissioned pieces that make up the leading exhibition at the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, Portugal.
