    Shell Cameo, Gold Pendant-Brooch
The oversized pendant-brooch features an oval-shaped shell cameo, depicting a mythological scene in which Zeus, the god of the sky, is riding in his eagle drawn chariot with lightning bolt in hand, set in 14k gold, completed by double pendant bails; together with a pinstem and catch on the reverse. Gross weight 57.18 grams.
    Dimensions: 3-7/8 inches x 3-1/4 inches

    Condition Report*: Gem Type: Shell
    Gem Count: 1 - 25
    Overall Condition: Very Good
Notes: Cameo is in great shape. The shell has an undulating surface and notably a very large size which makes it not only unique, but more rare. Zeus was God of the gods and of the sky, typically pictured with a thunderbolt or lightning in his hand. The birds, especially the eagle, were believed to be Zeus's messengers; his priests would try to foretell the future through the birds flight. In our opinion, the mounting is not original to the cameo: the cameo pre-dates its setting.
