Wempe: Watchmaker Gerhard Diedrich Wilhelm Wempe founded his own company in 1878 at age 21 in Elsfleth, Germany, with only eighty deutsche marks. Herbert Wempe took over when Gerhard passed away in 1921. By 1953, there were five Wempe stores in Hamburg, and the company expanded further within Germany during the 1960’s, when jewelry was in high demand. By this time, Hellmut Wempe had assumed responsibility for the company, and in 1980, he made the bold move of bringing Wempe to Fifth Avenue in New York City during one of Germany’s worst recessions. In the 1990’s, Wempe opened a shop on London’s New Bond Street, as well as on luxury cruise ships. Under the leadership of Kim-Eva Wempe, the company expanded further, becoming a well-known international fourth-generation brand. In 2013, Wempe opened its first boutique in Asia. Wempe jewelry is known for having proud, sensual, timeless designs, and it is known for its 1942 patent on an all-in-one chronometer for watches, still being used today.
