Condition Notes: The undisputed champion of cultured pearls, a Mikimoto necklace is a natural addition to any jewelry enthusiast's collection. Here is a Mikimoto cultured pearl necklace, a beautiful, classic graduated strand. The closure is marked for Mikimoto, is stamped "S" for silver, and tests as silver by XRF. The complementary closure hook tests as white metal with XRF testing. The pearls are strung on a cord. Superbly matched and in excellent shape and color, these pearls have a lower luster than Akoya pearls are typically regarded for.
Mikimoto: The name Mikimoto is synonymous with the highest quality Japanese cultured pearls available. Its founder, Kokichi Mikimoto, was an early pioneer in the concept of pearl farming. While he was not the first to invent the culturing process, Mikimoto did refine it, patenting his technique. He is recognized as the master of the culturing process. The need for culturing pearls arose out of the demise of the natural pearl market in 1930, when over-fishing and pollution devastated pearl beads. Today, cultured pearls are farmed worldwide with Japan, China, Australia and Thailand the leading producers.
