Riker Bros.: William Riker was born to Dutch immigrants in Montclair, New Jersey in 1822. He was an apprentice in the jewelry industry at the age of 15, and continued his studies in New York City before opening a successful shop in Newark, New Jersey. His jewelry firm became known for its use of transparent enamel without backing, which few American companies created. Over the course of his career, William created many patents involving mechanical processes for jewelry production. When William and one of his sons left the company, his other two sons changed the name from Riker and Sons to Riker Brothers. William died in 1898, and William Jr. continued leading the company until the 1940’s.
