Condition Notes: This impressive lot features four pairs of cuff links crafted by renowned Mexican silversmith Antonio Pineda. Each pair is marked "970," indicating a high silver content of 97%, surpassing the standard sterling silver content of 92.5%, and all show various stages of tarnish that can be easily polished. The variety in design and materials used showcases Pineda’s mastery of combining organic and geometric forms, such as brass and black hardwood sections with obsidian and green hardstone embellishments.
Antonio Pineda: In 1941 at the age of 22, Antonio Pineda opened his own workshop in his hometown of Taxco after working and studying with other notable artists and silver workshops, including William Spratling. His reputation was launched in 1944 when he participated in an international exposition in San Francisco at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, where his collection of some eighty pieces were bought entirely by Gump’s. This relationship continued for many years with Gump’s supplying the stones and Pineda designing and producing the jewelry.
At his height in 1956, Pineda had established his operation of over one hundred and sixty craftspeople, creating jewelry and sculpture in two different workshops. Building influence from Pre-Conquest motifs to his more successful modernist aesthetic, his pieces are still sought after by collectors.
A Pineda piece in gold and accented by diamonds is very rare, as he was primarily a master silversmith (see Lot #56042 in Auction #5353). Type(s): Hardstone, Obsidian
