MACEDON. Chalcidian League. Ca. 432-348 BC. AR tetradrachm (24mm). Olynthus, 383-382 BC. Laureate head of Apollo left / Χ-Α-Λ-ΚΙΔ-ΕΩΝ, cithara (lyre) with seven strings

The Chalcidian League was a defensive coalition with a capital in Olynthus; it was formed in 432 BC and dissolved in 348 BC. The league was formed by the free cities of Chalcidice, a three-fingered area of land extending into the Aegean Sea from eastern Macedon. The free cities came together in response to Athenian imperialism and the growing power of the Macedonian Kingdom. The coin was legal tender at all cities belonging to the league until its dissolution following the capture and destruction of Olynthus by King Philip II of Macedon in 348 BC.
