Condition Notes: This compact case is a dazzling emblem of Hollywood's golden age romance, once a heartfelt gift from Clark Gable to Carole Lombard. The exquisite piece, set in platinum with floral bows and ribbon motifs, is encrusted with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and demantoid garnets. Its craftsmanship reflects the grandeur of a bygone era, and the compact's interior reveals a mirror, a silent witness to the intimate moments of a storied love. The delicate inscription "LG" forever entwines Lombard and Gable, making this compact a unique testament to their legendary love story. Tests platinum and 14k gold. Diamonds measuring 1.00 mm - 2.00 x 1.30 mm. Colored stones measuring 1.70 mm - 4.00 x 2.75 mm. Metal shows toning consistent with age and use.
Paul Flato: American jeweler Paul Flato (1900-1999) opened his first shop in New York City, catering to socialites. His popularity reached its zenith in 1930s Hollywood where his lavish creations adorned the likes of Merle Oberon, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Charlie Chaplin, Katherine Hepburn and Hopalong Cassidy, as well as a smattering of socialites. Flato‘s designs were stylized, full of humor and whimsy. His refined lines and impeccable craftsmanship were unparalleled. Following a few sojourns behind bars, he operated in Zona Rosa, Mexico from 1970 - 1990. Flato passed away in Ft. Worth, Texas at age 98.
