Property of an Oceanside, CA Collector

Beginning in 1849 with the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in California, gold-in-quartz specimens, at the time unique to the California gold mines, were fashioned into jewelry. People from all over the world rushed to California to seek their fortune in the gold fields. San Francisco, which grew from a population of a few hundred in 1848 to over 40,000 by 1852, attracted craftsmen from every trade, but especially jewelers, goldsmiths and silversmiths. These craftsmen were instrumental in producing the beautiful gold-in-quartz jewelry so popular in the area. All types of jewelry, from rings, pendants and bracelets to cuff links, match safes and cane handles were made. This era of gold-in-quartz jewelry came to end as a result of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which destroyed most of the city. By the time the city was rebuilt most of the craftsmen had moved on. These original gold-in-quartz jewelry pieces are much sought after today.
