James Little: James Little was born in 1947 on a Navajo reservation located in northeastern Arizona. His early life was spent in silence due to a birth defect that affected his hearing, so he spent his youth observing his mother weaving rugs and his uncle working silver jewelry. By the age of 19, with the benefit of several surgeries and a hearing aid, he expressed his desire to learn to make jewelry and left to study under Kenneth Bejay at the Navajo Community College. By 1979, James Little was gaining recognition for his contemporary pieces made with exquisite details and flawless finishes. He’s compared today to other Native American artists such as Richard and Boyd Tsosie, Ben Nighthorse, and Charles Loloma.
