Overall Condition: Very Good
Condition Notes: Measuring an exceptional 22.31 x 15.68 x 11.76 mm, this Madagascar sapphire displays impressive scale paired with lively violet blue saturation and the crystalline clarity increasingly associated with the island’s top material. Gemstone condition throughout the piece is very good. The ring is unmarked but tests as 14k gold via XRF and standard metal testing methods. XRF analysis also detected palladium and silver within the alloy, contributing to the slightly cooler tonality of the mounting.

Madagascar rose to prominence as a major sapphire source in the late 1990s. Much of the production is alluvial, with stones recovered from ancient stream beds rather than primary host rock. Miners frequently excavate narrow shafts exceeding 50 feet in depth to access sapphire bearing gravel layers, following these horizons into compact underground pockets where material is extracted by hand. Though physically demanding and largely small scale in operation, this mining structure has played a significant role in Madagascar’s global influence, owing to the region’s broad sapphire color ranges and the periodic emergence of stones of unique examples such as this one.
