Condition Notes: A vivid star ruby, its six-rayed asterism crisp under direct light, rests in a vintage Van Cleef & Arpels mounting. Encircled by brilliant-cut diamonds, the cabochon glows with saturated purplish red, electric against the stillness of the setting. A jewel of precise drama. Marked Van Cleef & Arpels, NY 47459, PT950. The outer band marked VCA. The ring includes an adjustable sizer fitted to the shank, allowing it to be worn comfortably on fingers sized 4-1/2 to 5-3/4. With the sizer removed, it may accommodate fingers up to two sizes larger. The ring can be resized, but doing so may affect the maker's marks. One diamond shows a minor chip along the girdle, visible only under close inspection. Accompanied by a copy of an insurance valuation from Van Cleef & Arpels, as well as a letter confirming the buy-back value and stone weights.
Van Cleef & Arpels: Parisian jeweler Alfred Van Cleef opened his salon in partnership with his brothers-in-law, Julien and Charles Arpels, in 1906. The company quickly earned a reputation for using only the highest-quality colored gemstones. Their timeless designs employed elegant curves and clean, fluid lines, capturing the essence of beauty in motion. In 1930, the firm patented the first minaudiere, a purse-like compartmentalized vanity case. In 1933, Van Cleef and Arpels introduced "invisible setting" or "mystery setting." This innovative technique took the market by storm. The firm continues under the umbrella of the Richemont Group.
