Note: Ezra C. Fitch served as the President of the American Waltham Watch Co. from 1883 to 1921. In 1879 Fitch patented a dust proof watch case. The case has a heavy screw down bezel with the back and rim being constructed as a single unit. The crown and pendant have a left hand thread. The user unscrews the crown in the direction of the winding. When the watch is fully wound, the crown can no longer be rotated forward, and the left hand thread allows it then to be screwed down to form a tight dust and dirt proof seal. Examples in gold are exceedingly rare!
