Elgin Rare & Fine Grade 91, 2nd Model 21 Jewel Convertible, circa 1881Case: 14k gold, three body, 16 size, 52 mm, hinged back with ring of leaves around a central overlay monogram, reeded rim, engraved front bezel that flips open from the crown, inner bezel and glass over the movement
Dial: double sunk, black Roman numerals, black minute track, sub seconds, thin blued steel moon hands
Movement: No. 942242, raised gold jewel settings, three finger bridge, straight line lever escapement with counter poised pallet to the gold escape wheel, gold train, Moseley micrometric regulator, marked adjusted on the pillar plate, engraved flowers on the balance bridge, fully damaskeened
Signed: Elgin Natl. Watch Co., case marked Dueber, gross weight 125.7 grams
Note: This rare American timepiece is an example of the finest craftsmanship of the period. All steel parts are finished with superior mirror and satin surfaces and there are no less than 53 gold parts including the curved regulator screw, minute wheel, hour pipe, hairspring collet, time train gears, escape wheel, banking pins and all jewel settings. Catalog entries from the 1890 place the cost of this grade movement at $178.50 a very substantial sum. The lot present here is a superior example of the highest standard produced by Elgin before the turn of the century.
