Description
Hamilton Very Rare "Byrd" Explorer Series 14k Gold Watch, circa 1930Case: 14k gold, 39 mm x 27 mm, two body, hand made, elegant sloped and downward curved bezel and sides, back engraved "J.W. Miller Central Division, 1931"
Dial: silvered, black Arabic numerals and minute track, sub seconds, pointed blued steel baton hands
Movement: grade 401, 19 jewels, adjusted, H53759
Band: ostrich grain, plated buckle
The Explorer Series utilized Hamilton's grade 401 movement. With only 7500 grade 401 movements manufactured, it is very rare. The unique large rectangular movement employs a fifth pinion that is dedicated to powering the constant seconds.
Admiral Richard E. Byrd was a pioneer aviator and polar explorer. He was known for his historic explorations of Antarctica using airplane and other technical resources.
Selling at $150.00, the Byrd was and extraordinarily expensive watch during the Great Depression. Extremely rare, it is one of the great Hamilton collectible vintage watches.
