C.H. Brigden Rare 18 Size Prototype With Constant Force Escapement, circa 1918
Case: 57 mm, gilt metal, display case, 18 size
Dial: enamel, Roman numerals, black minute track, subsidiary seconds, blued steel spade hands
Movement: gilt, constant force escapement, full jeweled, plates adapted from an 18 size Elgin, bi-metallic compensated balance, main bridge signed C.H. Brigden 1918, stem winding and setting

Note: Charles H. Brigden of Waltham Mass. applied for a patent filed in 1921 that states, in part - "This invention relates to clock escapements more particularly designed for timepieces in which extreme accuracy is desired. In such escapements it is desirable to eliminate all parts subject to friction, since friction is a factor subject to wide fluctuations from time to time due to varying lubrication and surface conditions of the contacting parts. This invention provides a construction wherein the usual crutch and pallet bearings are entirely eliminated so that friction is greatly reduced and in its preferred forms requires no lubrication between the pallet and escape teeth".

Provenance: This lot was in the Time Museum as inventory No. 1062. It sold for $9000 in October 2004 at the "Masterpieces From The Time Museum" auction.
