A. Lange Dresden Extremely Rare Quality 1A Gold Quarter Repeater With Date, Certificate & Ledger Entry Stating "Watch Therefore The Oldest Still Existing Repetition By Lange, No. 7651", circa 1872
Case: massive 18k gold hunters case, four body, gold cuvette, engine turned front and back, reeded rim with gold slide to activate the repeater, 54.5 mm diameter, Jurgensen style lips, inner covers with hallmark C.W.S for Charles William Schumann, New York (certificate states "Schumann bought the Lange, only the clockwork, the case was produced in the U.S."), the date of sale listed on the certificate is 7.10.1872, the inner rim area of the case is marked "pat. May 5th, 1866" near the balance bridge which refers to the special hand setting device
Dial: white enamel, black Roman numerals, black minute track, subsidiary seconds dial at 9, date dial at 3, blue steel spade hands, steel double ended "U" shaped setting lever adjacent to 2 o'clock, lever for advancing the date at 4 o'clock
Movement: No. 7651, Kal. 43, gilt 3/4 plate, straight line lever escapement, cut bi-metallic balance with gold screws, diamond end stone jewels, gold escape wheel and pallet fork, index regulator to an engraved balance bridge, time train jeweled to the center wheel with cap jewels on the pallet and escape wheel, gold jewel settings, the entire repeat train is jeweled with rubies in gold settings held by blued steel screws, jeweled to the single polished steel hammer which strikes on gongs
Signed: movement and dial signed A. Lange Dresden, case with C.W.S makers marks

Note: Rare and highly important, this exceptional horological masterpiece is presented with a certificate from the Duetsches Uhrenmuseum Glashütte dated 10, February 2016. A copy of the original archive entry is also included. The certificate states in part "Original clockwork in an American gold hunter, Nr. 7651, watch therefore the oldest still existing repetition by Lange". Lange created a total of 22 repeating watches with date indication. The present lot is the oldest surviving Lange repeating watch, the fifth repeating watch produced and the first repeater with date indication.
