Note: The illustrious career and life of John Mohler Studebaker is well documented and this lot, his personal watch, is a museum quality timepiece given the signature dial, engraved portrait and enameled buggy and wagon. Born in 1833, he would lead the family business from making horse-drawn vehicles to self-propelled ones. Upon his death in 1917 the South Bend Tribune wrote of his life "Death claims the last of the five big brothers. J.M. Studebaker passes away in midst of family. End was peaceful. Manufacturer and philanthropist, conscious to the last, discusses business almost up to the final hour."
