Case: 14k heavy stock gold, made by E.H. & Co., N size, 54 mm, back with raised relief multicolor gold, crossed bayonet-mounted carbines, crossed sabers, crossed cannons, twin Major General insignia, helmet and green laurel leaves, front with intricately engraved monogram, gold dust cover engraved "Texas Volunteer Guard to Maj. Gen. A.S. Roberts in appreciation of his Twenty Five Years active service 1870-1895"
Dial: specially made O'Hara style dial with hours marked "Major General", gold foiled arches and minute dots, blued steel crescent hands, blue center with Lone Star surrounded by laurels, blue border marked "The State of Texas"
Movement: No. 223155, damaskeened nickel finish, 3/4 plate, 15 jewels, gold jewel settings held by blued screws, bi-metallic compensated balance with gold timing screws, deer grade, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and six positions
Note: This historically important timepiece was one of the finest American watches in production of the time. The dial and case are one-of-a kind and the movement is the highest quality made by Howard in the period. Major General Albert Samuel Roberts joined the Confederate Army in 1861 as a member of the "Tom Green Rifles", which became Company B, Fourth Texas Infantry. The brigade was involved in many important battles under Robert E. Lee. A.S. Roberts joined the Volunteer Guard in 1868 which was the forerunner of the Texas National Guard. This watch commemorates his retirement on July 1st, 1895 as leader of the Guard.
