Signed: Hiram W. Smith, Boston Mass.
Note: Smith was born Sept. 21, 1820 in Cornish NH. He died on Aug. 7, 1898 in Cambridge MA. He started a watch and material business in Boston in 1852. He sold E. Howard watches and imported Swiss Jurgensen-like and English Waltham-like watches. The present watch is an interesting and rare example of a high quality model 1857 "copy". It is of superior quality and finish which is rarely seen in foreign made Swiss "fakes" which were made to imitate the America Watch Co. timepieces. It is also interesting to note that in Tolke/King's "IWC International Watch Company" Hiram W. Smith is identified as an American partner of Florentine A. Jones with James B. Brown as founders of IWC in 1871.
