    Note: The case bears the following inscription:

    Presented by the Government of Canada to Captain Ama. C. Sears, Master of the Barque "Smyrniote" of Boston United States of America in recognition of his humane exertions in the rescue of the crew of the Wrecked Ship "Jacob V. Troop" of St. John, N.B. 21st March 1876

    Ama Churchill Sears (1836 - 1894) was a ship-master in the East India trade and he lived in Plymouth Ma. Canadian vessels records show that the wood ship the Jacob V. Troop was constructed in 1869 and abandoned at sea March 21, 1876.
