Note: The subject matter of this timepiece is very rare. "Hermes is an Olympian god in Greek mythology, son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia. He is a god of transitions and boundaries, is quick and cunning, and moves freely between the worlds of mortal and divine." He was also known as a trickster. He is most often shown with winged sandals and cap and carries a staff called caduceus, which is shown with 2 snakes wrapped around a 'winged' staff. All these features are shown clearly on the fine repousse gold case as he stands directing the viewer to the background scene of a mountain.
