Description
Swiss Rare & Very Fine Gold Papal Watch, Case by Aucoc Ainé Paris With Original Box, Key & Medal, circa 1870Case: 18k yellow gold, four body, gold cuvette signed Aucoc Ainé a Paris, engraved pendant, bow and inner bezel, front is engraved with a royal papal crest, back with fine swirl leaves, flowers and ribbons, reeded pattern to the case rim, 46 mm
Dial: white enamel, Roman numerals, spade hands
Movement: gilt bridge, lateral lever escapement, 15 jewels, No. 4475, bi-metallic compensated balance
Note: Louis Aucoc was a leading Parisian Art Nouveau jeweler and goldsmith, working with his father and brother André. The firm was established in 1821 and was patronized by the house of King Louis Philippe, Napoleon III and Empress Eugenia. From 1874 to 1876 René Lalique was an apprentice to Aucoc. The present lot is expertly engraved and highly unusual. It is presented with a gold "scepter" form winding key, a fitted box and and gold medal, both of which also carry the royal papal crest.
