Note: Production of the reference 1463 began in 1940. The reference was produced in yellow and rose gold and a few examples in stainless steel. The present lot is fitted with gold Breguet numerals. The general belief is that fewer than 100 pieces in all metals were fitted with this type dial and very few, only 13 examples in yellow gold exist with Breguet dials. This important watch is stamped "HOX" on the balance bridge. This American import marking confirms the watch was made solely for sale in the United States, and likely special-ordered for one of Gumbiner's most important clients. In the mid-20th century, American retailers rarely stocked high-value complicated watches. Another rare piece, also retailed by the small Madison Avenue jeweler D. Gumbiner, that sold at auction was a Patek Philippe reference 2499 perpetual calendar chronograph which achieved a sales price of $815,600. It also had the "HOX" marking on the balance bridge. The exceptional reference 1463 in this auction comes from the family of the original owner and is being offered to collectors for the very first time.
