Rolex "Padellone" Ref. 8171 Extremely Fine and Rare Steel Automatic Triple Calendar Wristwatch with Moon Phases, circa 1950
Case: No. 686232, acier inoxydable, 38 mm, three body, sloped bezel, concave and curved lugs, calendar corrector pushers on the band, inside back lid numbered 214/8171
Dial: matte silver, applied rose gold dart and pyramidal indexes, gold numeral at twelve above a rose gold coronet, gold feuille hands, steel and blue tip central date pointer, outer black minute marks, outermost blue Arabic date numerals, upper apertures for the days of the week and months, lower blue and gold moon phase disc within the subsidiary seconds track
Movement: caliber 10 1/2''', nickel finish, 18 jewels, automatic, chronometer, super balance, straight line lever escapement
Band: brown crocodile with a steel Rolex buckle
Signed: triple signed Rolex

Note: the ultra rare reference 8171 is considered to be the key watch in any serious Rolex collection. The Italian collectors gave this model the nick name "Padellone" (big pan) due to the largeness of the case and the pan shape of the back. The interior case number of 214 indicates that this reference 8171 was the 214th produced in the series. The model was made in a limited series of approximately 1000 examples between 1949 and 1952, mostly in yellow gold. Examples in pink gold or in stainless steel are very rare.
