20th-Century American Designers Share Spotlight at Heritage
Auctions
n exceptional selection of top American 20th-century design, from
designers like George Nakashima, Charles and Ray Eames, Thomas
Molesworth and Wendell Castle will find new homes when they cross
the block in Heritage Auctions' Design Auction Jan. 28.
"This is an outstanding event that features works by some of the
top American designers of the 20th century," Heritage Auctions
Design Director Brent Lewis said. "The selection offered here
really highlights some of the strengths and innovations in American
design, from mid-century leaders Charles and Ray Eames, to studio
artists like George Nakashima and Wendell Castle."
A recipient of the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Japanese
government, Nakashima is widely regarded as one of the innovators
of 20th-century American design. His Conoid Dining
Table, 1970 (estimate: $25,000-35,000) is an exceptional
piece from a private California collection, topped by just over six
feet of English Walnut with two rosewood butterfly keys. The sale
also features an outstanding Cabinet, 1957
from the same collection. His unique approach to furniture making
made his works prized by collectors, seeking works combining
structure of form as well as free expressions of nature through
natural wood tops.
Thomas Molesworth's
Bench from Old Lodge, Glenwood Springs, CO, circa
1935 (estimate: $10,000-15,000) comes from an important private
collection. The 82-inch fir bench, was made for Molesworth's most
important commission, Old Lodge, and is a rarely-seen work from
that project. It follows the important artist's signature
distinctly Western style of furniture and accessories that often
incorporates hides, horn and natural wood, earning him credit for
popularizing the so-called "cowboy furniture" style.
The auction features four collaborative lots by
Charles Eames. He teamed up with Eero Saarinen on a pair of bench and
cabinet lots for the seminal Organic Design Competition, and
two lots from private collections on which he paired his wife, the
artist and designer, Ray Kaiser Eames who helped make the Eames
studio so influential: LCW, circa
1945 (estimate: $2,000-3,000), a leather and wood chair with
its original green upholstery and intact labels, and Two MAX-1 Chairs,
1960s, Herman Miller (estimate: $1,000-1,500) with original
upholstery in outstanding condition.
